Here’s a step-by-step guide to making rye grain spawn jars for mushroom growing at home:
Step 1: Prepare the Organic Rye Grain
- Measure your organic rye grain and soak it in water for 12–24 hours to hydrate.
- After soaking, rinse the grain thoroughly to remove any debris.
- Boil the grain for 10 minutes to soften it, then drain and let it dry until the surface is slightly moist but not wet.
2: Prepare Jars
- Use mason jars with lids fitted with a filter (e.g., mycology synthetic filter disks) to allow gas exchange.
- Drill small holes in the lids (8mm-13mm), smooth the edges, and clean the lids thoroughly. Cover the holes with filter patches or synthetic filter disks for sterility.
3: Fill the Jars
- Fill each jar about two-thirds full with the prepared rye grain.
- Seal the jars with lids and ensure the filters are secure.
4: Sterilize the Jars
- Place the filled jars in a pressure cooker and sterilize at 15 PSI for 90 minutes.
- Let the jars cool completely inside the pressure cooker before handling.
5: Inoculation
- In a sterile environment (using a still air box or flow hood), inject your chosen mushroom spore solution through the filter-covered holes in the jar lids.
- Seal the injection points with micropore tape after inoculation to prevent contamination.
6: Incubation
- Store the inoculated jars in a dark, warm area at around 22-27°C (72-80°F).
- Wait 2–4 weeks for the mycelium to fully colonize the rye grain, shaking the jars occasionally to distribute the mycelium evenly.
Once fully colonized, your rye grain spawn is ready to use for further mushroom cultivation in bulk substrates or fruiting chambers.
